Hyena electric bikes was officially founded in early 2010 after growing interest in custom made high performance electric bike conversions. Jay AKA Hyena would frequently be stopped and asked “wow, that looks like a heap of fun, where did you get it ?” After confessing he had made it himself and they weren’t available in the shops the question was often followed up with “you should build and sell these things! Do you think you could make me one ??”
E-bikes were starting to become available in the shops and have since grown much more in popularity but many who tried these 200 or 250w powered machines came to the same conclusion, the concept had merit but they were too heavy and too under powered.
The fun police state that thou shall not exceed 25km/hr or 250w on an electric bike on public roads, but for offroad riding the same limitiations don’t apply. In the early years of performance electric bike development there were limited battery options. Battery packs either needed to be huge and heavy to deliver the required current or they had to be make from repurposed lithium polymer cells used chiefly in the remote control toy field. These packs were small and light but were not terribly user friendly and required complex balancing and charging procedures that made the kits more of an enthusiast project than a plug and play appliance. Thankfully with advances in battery technology suitable user friendly batteries that ARE plug and play are now available and these are standard in all our kits.
For many years Hyena Electric Bikes has been run as a small hobby business. First and foremost our team are electric bike enthusiasts however with growing demand formalising HEB as a proper business became a necessity. While we’re less interested in the ‘businessy’ stuff we hope to use it to our advantage and growing in size will allow us to buy necessary components on a larger scale and pass on those savings. As we’ve always done, a chunk of the money will go largely back into R&D, testing the latest battery, motor and controller technology and developing our own bespoke ebike frames.
Jay comes from a mountain bike background initially and later moved on to higher powered 2 wheeled pursuits with dirt bike riding. However living close to the city there was no where within an hours drive that you could legally ride a dirt bike. However literally 2 minutes walk away were vast mountain bike friendly reserves, national parks and bush land. Jay set about mixing his 2 former interests, creating something that had similar performance to a small dirt bike but with the silent and light weight benefits of mountain biking. The result was high powered electric bicycles, built on a heavy duty mountain bike platform, totally silent and legally allowed in areas where you’d otherwise be chased by police and rangers. This was the birth of the Hadron kit and over the years has gradually evolved and been refined to be even more powerful.
In 2011 Jay was struck by what he refers to as “a bit of a set back” when he was diagnosed with cancer. After a difficult slog with surgery, intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy he was eventually back on his feet but the whole process left him with a damaged heart and lungs. No longer able to pedal hard enough to ride on anything but flat terrain his mountain bike riding days would have been over had he not already developed the perfect solution to a problem he didn’t previously have. He found ebikes invaluable in his rehabilitation, enabling him to gradually regain his fitness using progressively less and less motor assistance while enjoying the outdoors instead of being stuck in hospital rehab facility or gym. We have found over the years that while a good chunk of the people we’ve helped get into ebikes are the younger, fun seeking crowd a significant number of more “mature” riders have also seen the benefits of our high performance kits. Whether just on the far side of sprightly or nursing injuries or disabilities, as long as you can balance and stay up right you’re never too old to ride a bike! While high speed is rarely sought the high power and torque of our kits gives less capable riders the confidence to ride anywhere they like knowing they won’t be defeated by a steep hill like they would on a lower powered shop bought bike.
Neither Hyena Electric Bikes nor anyone employed by or associated with us are responsible for what you do with the components or bikes we supply or how, where and why you use them. Regular mountain bike riding is an action sport that can be dangerous and result in injury and adding a motor to your bike certainly does not reduce this risk! Please ride responsibly and within your limits, especially if you are not experienced in riding motorbikes or even mountain bikes. Always wear a helmet and other appropriate safety clothing (we highly recommend wearing gloves at all times). Ensure that your bike and all components are properly maintained and routinely checked. This especially applies to the rear axle nuts which should be checked before every ride but also the regular bicycle components such as the brakes and front wheel.
Always ride in a sensible and responsible manner. Serious personal injury to yourself and others could result from misuse. Be especially careful if offering test rides to your family and friends, even if experienced bike riders they will not be expecting the instant torque that electric motors can deliver. Also be mindful that a powerful electric bike will enable you to ride up a steep hill just as fast as someone on a mountain bike is coming down. This is one of the great joys of ebiking but it’s not something a mountain bike rider belting down a hill and coming around a corner is expecting to come across. Even on flat ground such as tight single track where you don’t have good visibility ahead you should never ride faster than you can quickly stop. Unless you’re riding in very remote areas you should always expect a fellow mountain biker could be coming the other way, or any number of meandering pedestrians out for a bush walk. We’ve come around blind corners on the single track to encounter everything from families with young children to a heard of geriatrics on a retirement home outing around blind corners on
Please check your state laws before riding any of our performance kits on the road, all of them are several times the legal limit. The low powered road mode should be engaged when riding in public and this limits your speed to 25km/hr. Regular road bikes can be easily pedalled much faster than this so if you want to go faster on the road all you have to do is pedal
High performance off road electric bikes aren’t currently on the radar of the police or other regulators. Don’t draw any negative attention to yourself and lets keep it that way!
